Grant Recipients
Africa
Emmanuel Youth Empowerment Program, Kenya: Launched by Daniel Nduati, the Emmanuel Program will expand its computer literacy and life skills training to reach 850 disadvantaged youth living in the Dagoretti slums of Nairobi.
Grassroots Empowerment Initiative (GEMINI), Kenya: Founded by Stella Amojong, GEMINI will provide out-of-school girls, ages 15 to 24, in four urban slums in Eldoret, with mentoring, reproductive health education, and access to life skills training and economic opportunities.
Kamala Health Development Program, Nigeria: Launched by Muktar Gadanya, the program will expand support to 250 parents and children of those who have died of HIV/AIDS. Elderly “AIDS orphans” will gain access to livelihood opportunities.
Leadership Initiatives, Nigeria: Founded by Antoine Eloi, Leadership Initiatives will promote sustainable development in Bauchi, Nigeria through training 40 university students to develop entrepreneurial approaches to addressing local challenges.
Trees for Clean Energy Network, Kenya: Founded by Zablon Wagalla, TCEN will expand its reach to enable 200 low-income farmers to produce Jatropha, a clean energy biofuel.
Europe
Union 21st Century, Georgia: Launched by Khatuna Tsintsadze, the project will empower 50 disabled youth through providing access to education, skills training, and employment opportunities.
Latin America & the Caribbean
Adeco Acciones para el Desarrollo Comunitario, Mexico: Led by Javier Alejandro Lopez Aguilar, the project trains and organizes youth, ages 14 to 24, to lead development initiatives in disadvantaged communities. Support will be used to create a training handbook and website to link youth groups.
Center for Thinking, Education, and Debate, Haiti: Led by John Miller Beauvoir, the “Last Best Hope” project will reach out to 300 marginalized children, providing them with weekend classes on civic education, environmental awareness, and healthy living.
Hunab Proyecto de Vida AC, Mexico: Under the leadership of Maritza Morales, the project will train 30 Yucatan families in aquaculture and hydroponic farming, with the goal of enabling more local children to attend school.
MuJeres por la Justicia, Educación y el Reconocimeiento (MuJER), Guatemala: MuJER, founded by Ana Moraga, will create a community center where 250 women sex workers in Guatemala City can participate in educational and vocational programs and workshops.
Organization for Youth Empowerment (OYE), Honduras: Led by Ana Luisa Moran Ahern, the OYE Scholarship Program provides disadvantaged youth with resources and support to pursue their academic goals, as well as increase their social consciousness and leadership skills. Funding will expand the program’s reach to 50 additional youth.
North America
HealthCare Volunteer, United States: Through the “Teeth for Tots” program, HealthCare Volunteer, established by Neilesh Patel, will connect low-income families in California with volunteer dentists who will provide dental screenings.
OneChild, Canada: Started by Cheryl Perera, OneChild seeks to put an end to child sexual exploitation. Funding will support OneChild’s “Break the Chains” campaign to raise awareness and financial resources to protect and promote children’s rights.
MBAs Without Borders, Canada: Co-founded by Tal Dehtiar, MBAs Without Borders links top MBA leaders with local entrepreneurs in developing countries. Support will enable two MBA volunteers to develop a business model to distribute solar devices to rural communities in Tanzania and Zambia.
Mobilize.org, United States: Founded by David Smith, Mobilize.org will collaborate with Empty Bellies and Youth Action for Change – two youth-led initiatives – to develop an online Mobilizer’s Guidebook for use by youth activists globally.
Students of the World, United States: University students participating in Students of the World, founded by Courtney Spence, will showcase their documentary films/writing/photography, and the NGOs they work, with through an expanded, multi-media website.
Unite for Sight, United States: Representatives of 24 villages in Ghana will receive training through Unite for Sight, a global nonprofit launched by Jennifer Staple, to serve as community eye health workers who will reach more than 86,000 patients annually.
Asia & the Pacific
Australian Youth Climate Coalition (AYCC), Australia: Launched by Anna Rose, AYCC seeks to build a generation-wide movement to solve the climate crisis. Funds will be used to educate 25,000 high school students about climate change and solutions at the local, national, and global level.
Carpets for Communities, Cambodia: Carpets for Communities, founded by David Bacon, creates livelihood opportunities for low-income women so they can send their children to school. Support will expand its reach to 75 families and 215 children.
Kabataang Gabay sa Positibong Pamumuhay (KGPP), Inc., Philippines: The project, initiated by John Pierre Montilla, will strengthen the skills of 60 peer mentors and provide 50 formerly prostituted boys with mentoring training, artwork therapy, and income generating opportunities.
Science of Life Systems 24/7, Malaysia: SOLS 24/7, an initiative started by Raj Ridvan Singh, provides life skills training, education, and job access to low-income youth, ages 16 to 25. Support will enable the program to expand its reach to 200 youth.
Society for Awareness, Harmony, and Equal Rights (SAHER), India: Rama Shyam co-founded SAHER to combat social alienation and violence among Muslim and Hindu youth. Support will enable 50 youth to make informed life choices through generating awareness of livelihood options.
Vibewire Youth Services, Inc., Australia: Founded by Tom Dawkins, Vibewire is a youth self-expression portal. Funding will support a five-day “e-festival of ideas” during which youth will dialogue about issues they care about with thought leaders, academics, politicians, media commentators, youth workers, and others.
Youth Alliance for Human Rights, Pakistan: Established by Rana Bilal Ahmad, the Voice Against Violence project seeks to reduce physical violence against women/girls in Lahore through promoting nonviolent attitudes and behavior among young men/boys.
YouthWorks, Inc., Philippines: Launched by Audrey Codera, YouthWorks provides loans to underprivileged young entrepreneurs to start their own micro-enterprises. Funding will be used to make loans and to develop the ySHOP, an online marketplace where YouthWorks beneficiaries market their products.
