Barbara N. Squires became the Director of Leadership Development at the Annie E. Casey Foundation in February 2010, after serving as a Senior Associate since January 2007.  As Director, she oversees the implementation of the Foundation’s method of leadership development, called results-based leadership. Through a wide array of results-based leadership programs, the Foundation supports leaders in the social sector and within the Foundation to impact outcomes for children, families and communities.  From this portfolio of work, Ms. Squires directly manages the Children and Family Fellowship – the Foundation’s signature leadership development program which strives to increase the pool of diverse, visionary leaders with the confidence and competence to significantly impact results for children, their families and communities, and influence the systems and supports serving them.  She also oversees the Fellowship Alumni Network, comprised of the 109 Fellows from nine classes who have completed the Fellowship since 1993; and co-manages a leadership program serving seasoned and emerging leaders in the juvenile justice field.  Before coming to the Casey Foundation, Ms. Squires was the Assistant Commissioner for Maternal and Child Health (MCH) at the Baltimore City Health Department.   During her nearly twenty-two year tenure with the Baltimore City Health Department, she developed both policies and programs in the areas of childhood lead poisoning, substance abuse and maternal and child health.  While at the Health Department, Ms. Squires was an active member of the Casey Foundation-sponsored Baltimore Leadership in Action Program and the Maryland Leadership in Action Program – both addressing the issue of accelerating achievement of the City’s and State’s school readiness goals. She is a 1980 graduate of the Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree with a major in International Studies,
