In Tanzania, lack of access to reading materials—and the absence of a strong reading culture— results in a vicious cycle of low-literacy levels among children. With the belief that reading can open doors for youth, Innocent co-founded My Little Travelling Library in 2014. Through a network of mobile handcart libraries delivering books, interactive reading lessons, and reading competitions to children in rural areas without libraries, Innocent and his team help youth discover a passion for reading and independent learning. My Little Travelling Library makes learning fun, bringing its books and reading clubs not only to schools, but to youth-friendly spaces such as sports fields, beaches, and more. In 2016, the organization supplied nearly 20,000 books to its mobile libraries serving 2,400 youth in 15 primary schools across Mwanza, Tanzania. Each child borrows an average of 29 books per quarter, and teachers have reported an astounding jump in attendance from 40 to 85 percent since the arrival of My Little Travelling Library. The organization is growing fast thanks to the support of 100 local and international volunteers, most of whom are university students studying education.
