SELECTED FOR: Lady Meche
COUNTRY: Mexico
There are approximately 70,000 women working in the sex trade in Mexico City, including women in conditions of slavery or sexual servitude. There are thirteen sexual exploitation districts in the city. One of these is in the La Merced neighborhood, which is considered the largest brothel in Latin America. Lady Meche was created in 2014 to design strategies and implement social projects that reach women in the sex trade in the La Merced neighborhood. Their main goal is to reduce the psychosocial harm that affects the physical, emotional and mental wellbeing of these women. Lady Meche also provides support to the women to create cosmetic products that symbolize part of the history and identity that they have built in the neighborhood. Through this project, these women are transforming their reality by becoming Mexican entrepreneurs. Lady Meche is currently working towards becoming a social enterprise with international reach, fighting for the rights of women who are victims of commercial sexual exploitation, and promoting the rich heritage of the community of La Merced.
