Sarah co-founded Development In Gardening (DIG) to empower HIV-affected and other at-risk individuals in developing nations to meet their basic nutritional needs by teaching them to create self-sustaining community gardens. While tremendous gains have been realized in making anti-retroviral therapy (ART) available to impoverished people living with HIV/AIDS, reports show that patients who start ART drugs while malnourished are six times more likely to die than well-nourished patients. To address this challenge, DIG gardens boost nutrition, reduce spending on care, strengthen a weakened work force, and stimulate small business growth. By 2013, DIG hopes to complete 15 community gardens and facilitate up to 85 home gardens, extending its benefits to up to 40,000 people.
