Michael founded SailFuture to inspire and empower youth at-risk to make transformative life changes. His own first-hand experience in the juvenile justice system taught him that most intervention programs fail because they are unable to truly engage youth. By contrast, SailFuture equips college students and young professionals to serve as mentors to troubled teens. Together, they learn to sail and develop a relationship as equals. The mentors also serve as one-on-one tutors and create an individualized academic plan that enables students to chart a course to graduation and their future goals. A customized curriculum ties critical life skills such as goal-setting, conflict resolution, and resilience to the fundamentals of sailing. In 2013, SailFuture served 40 youth-at risk, and equipped 40 mentors with leadership skills.
